Author Fran Lebowitz first came to fame in the early 1970s when Andy Warhol hired her to write a column for Interview magazine. In 1978, Lebowitz published Metropolitan Life, a book of essays, followed by Social Studies three years later. Both books became New York Times best-sellers and were reissued as a single volume called The Fran Lebowitz Reader in 1994. Since 1997 she has been a contributing editor and columnist for Vanity Fair. In 2010, Martin Scorsese profiled Lebowitz in the HBO documentary Public Speaking. Scorsese and Lebowitz will collaborate again in an upcoming Netflix series.
